Duggar Baucom, men’s basketball coach of The Citadel, collapsed within the first two minutes of his team’s game vs. No. 5 Duke on Monday night.
Baucom, 61, collapsed to the ground after his team scored its first basket to make the score 3-2. Baucom remained conscious as he was helped off the court at Cameron Indoor Stadium. He was taken to Duke University Hospital to be evaluated.
The collapse happened suddenly, as shown in the video below:
Here is the video of Duggar Baucom after collapsing on the court… It’s not graphic, just shows how sudden it was. He is walking off, with assistance, under his own power. Such a scary situation. He’s a wonderful man, truly hope everything OK with him. pic.twitter.com/gyV8fIIHtw

The Citadel’s assistant coach Jack Castleberry took over as interim coach for the remainder of the game. The Citadel ended up losing to Duke 107-81.
In the postgame news conference, Castleberry said Baucom spoke to him after the incident and said he was in a lot of pain. This shocked Castleberry because he said Baucom is “the toughest dude I know.”
Citadel assistant coach Jack Castleberry said Duggar Baucom “is as good as he can be. He’s in good spirits.”

The reason for Baucom’s collapse is unknown at the moment. The most recent update on his condition was that he made it to the hospital and was getting looked at for any concerning issues.
Baucom, in his seventh year coaching The Citadel, was still able to meet Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski for the first time before the game started.
Baucom told media before the game that he used to always listen to Duke games when he worked as a North Carolina State Trooper and that it was “surreal” to meet Krzyzewski and coach against him. The 2021-22 season is Coach K’s final season coaching collegiate basketball.
